MANHOOD
Men long to be great.
Not only do men long to be great, we also desire to be recognized as being great. But so many men struggle to capitalize on their true potential and end up chasing things that draw them further away from where they can fully be. This workshop explores authentic manhood by demonstrating how man was created to exercise responsibility and influence over the various areas of his life, including himself.
When a man functions within the principles of manhood, those around him benefit from his direction and care. That means living with honor, pursuing a life of integrity and contributing to the success of the whole. It means leading by example and lifting the aspirations of those around you. These are the true hallmarks of manhood and the strategy for winning at life.
Players will explore areas of manhood, such as:
- honesty
- effort
- decisiveness
- influence
- self-respect
LEADERSHIP
The best way to teach someone how to do something is to show them how it’s done.
If you want someone to follow you, you’re going to have to show them that you’ve been there before. In other words, a leader is someone who knows the way and wants you to follow them there.
But leadership is about more than just knowing the way. It’s about caring. It’s about personal sacrifice. The difference between someone who is in charge and a true leader hinges on the degree to which that leader cares about the other teammates, staff and crew. If a leader is willing to walk with his team through the dark places of life, they will follow that leader anywhere.
Players will explore areas of leadership, such as:
- humility
- dependability
- self-control
- authenticity
- inspiring others through personal passion and effort
RACIAL UNITY/EQUITY
Unity is vital for a team to succeed.
Each player needs to know that they matter and that they are seen as having equal worth. That worth builds cohesion, which contributes to winning games. With the diversity of race and the oft-attached cultural inequities which exist, the challenges for building unity are real. Authentic understanding and cultural sensitivities are critical in forming a strong team dynamic. Unity comes through embracing diversity, not in eliminating it.
Additional aspects regarding race involve looking at the current socio-political climate, acknowledging imbalances and discrimination, and looking at helpful approaches to impacting culture on these issues. Whether this involves activism, communication via social media channels and personal relationships, NFL players are uniquely positioned to influence positive transformation in the area of racial unity.
Players will explore areas such as:
- embracing diversity
- effective listening
- defeating hatred
- communicating with wisdom on sensitive issues
- valuing unity both on and off the field
PURPOSE
Most men dream of significance.
They want to win the bowl, make history, and forever be enshrined in the Hall. They see this as their purpose. While these are excellent goals to have, a man’s purpose— his legacy—extends beyond the field. It includes leaving a mark on the lives within your circle of influence. Whether that’s through community impact, urban renewal, mentoring or inspiration, purpose arises from the heart that beats for more than himself. Every man might have a purpose, but not every man lives like it. And lasting purpose requires effort, sacrifice, commitment and endurance.
So, how do you inspire someone to achieve significance through a lasting legacy? What does it take to get someone to commit to a purpose and see it all the way through? The answers lie in the power of vision. If someone can see the impact they are uniquely positioned to make, they become more willing to offer up the sacrifices necessary and stay the course to leaving lasting change.
Players will explore areas of purpose, such as:
- developing a vision
- leveraging your platform
- identifying and protecting your brand
- recognizing the needs around you
- vetting activist approaches
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
One of the most important aspects of a young athlete’s life is the quality of the personal relationships they possess and their ability to navigate those relationships in a healthy manner.
Out-of-control socializing that lacks wisdom can even trickle over and affect their career. Today, many athletes face a wide variety of relational challenges whether done to them or by them, such as domestic abuse, groupie influences, family breakdown and more.
Working hard to build healthier relationships, young athletes will begin to take control of their lives, and as such, experience more personal successes, both on and off the field. As they become more sensitive to treating others with respect using discernment in what they do, say and who they align with, those attitudes will spill over into how well they interact with their teammates.
Players will explore issues regarding personal relationships, such as:
- choosing the right circle
- respecting authority
- eliminating sucker-shoots
- the importance of self-control
- understanding domestic abuse and its dangers
